India!

Even before I landed I experienced my first taste of India, and not just because they served Indian food for breakfast! Flying into Mumbai you fly directly over the slums, they also border the airport, looking down and accross, you get an idea of the sheer number of people that live there (over 3 million in Mumbai alone). Once I landed and I started to experience the quailty of Indian infrastructure, I knew it was going to have to do some adjusting and resetting of expectations ;)

The airport is half finished, the roads leading into it and around it are potholed and unfinished, the cars have no seatbelts (although some of them have a sash that you can hold over your middle), the bikers and scooter riders wear no helmets, and the airport exit is protected by military with AK-47s. After a crazy taxi ride from the international airport to the domestic where lanes, signals and rules ceased to exist, I took a short flight to Goa.

Mark and Simone met me at the airport as planned which was awesome and I am so greatful as my plane was stuck on the tarmac for almost an hour once we reached Goa airport (which is actually a naval base). I am staying in a house near Margoa which is in the south of Goa, our house has two bedrooms and one Indian and one European bathroom. With 5 people staying there it’s a bit of a squeeze, but seeing they are all awesome its not too bad and it is not like we have been spending much time there.

We have eaten a couple of times on the beach at a ’shack’ called Coco’s which has awesome food at ridiculously cheap prices. Most meals and drinks come in at under 500 rupee (AUD$15) including tip. Breezers are a popular drink choice given the cost of 80rp each (about $2).

Lots of planning has gone into this wedding and it’s all quite insane at the moment. I have my shirwani (sp) and it is purple and gold. I will promise to take lots of photos and bring it home with me.

I wrote this message on my phone but haven’t been able to get it online, so sorry for the delay. Happy New Year to everyone!
